Recent discoveries place habitation in Bonita Springs some 8000 years ago.
Thousands of Calusa Indians the Spanish when they came in 1539 looking for the Fountain of Youth. The arrival of European diseases and slave trading almost wiped out the Calusa Indians. The few survivors moved to the Florida Keys and on to Cuba.
In the 1870's, government surveyors pitched camp, at a spot named Survey, along a stream called Surveyor's Creek.
During the next decade only a few hardy souls moved into the area. In 1887 a small, thatched-roof, log-walled public school was built. Braxton B. Comer bought 6000 acres of land around Survey. And began growing pineapples, bananas, coconuts and other fruit. Once here, they stayed in the old Surveyor's camp and called their new home Survey.
Within a few years, Survey developed into a community with a post office and a hotel which catered to those attracted to the area's hunting and fishing opportunities.
Next a Mr. Ragsdale purchased 2400 acres around Survey. He and his associate, Dan Farnsworth, surveyed the area and laid out a community with streets and avenues named for potential buyers. The developers decided to rename the town Bonita Springs.
Basically the only way to get to Bonita Springs was by Boat. In 1917 a crude road was built between Fort Myers and Bonita Springs. Barron Collier extended his Fort Myers-Southern Railroad to Bonita Springs in 1925. The Tamiami Trail was completed in 1928 and Bonita Springs became available to almost everyone. The development of air conditioning and the completion of the Interstate Highway made the Paradise of Bonita Springs available to everyone.
